Description
Samuel Cony (1811-1870), former governor of Maine, wrote to George F. Shepley (1819-1878) of Portland to congratulate him on his appointment as a U.S. Circuit Court judge.
Cony, who served as governor from 1864-1867, suggested that Shepley's appointment was held up "too long" by Maine Republicans because he was in the way of "their own ambitious drives."
He also noted that Shepley's appointment was the first recognition by Grant "of that class of men not Republicans at the outset of the Rebellion, who turned their backs upon life long friends ... to aid in the preservation of our national birthrights."
Shepley switched his allegiance from the Democratic to the Republican party after his long service as a brigadier general in the Civil War.
