Description
Peter Thacker, register of bankruptcies in Rockland, wrote to George F. Shepley of Portland to congratulate him on his nomination as U.S. Circuit Judge.
Thacker wrote, "it has seemed to me that there has hitherto been a disposition, in some quarters, to ignore your merits & claims."
Shepley, who served as U.S. Attorney for Maine before the Civil War, was commander of the 12th Maine and military governor of Louisiana, among other wartime duties. A Democrat before the war, he switched to the Republican Party afterwards.
