Description
Maine Senator Hannibal Hamlin wrote to George F. Shepley of Portland explaining why he was not supporting his nomination as circuit court judge.
Hamlin said that "Morrill" had the support of delegates from New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts and Maine, with two or three exceptions. Hamlin had promised not to oppose Morrill before he knew Shepley was interested in the job.
Hamlin said he could not go back on his promise to not oppose Morrill. President Ulysses S. Grant made the appointment.
Shepley, a Civil War veteran with a distinguished record as military governor of Louisiana and of Eastern Virginia, ultimately was nominated and appointed to the post.
