Description
Unidentified members of the Woman's Literary Union in Portland are dressed as early members of the federation of women's study clubs to observe the group's 85th anniversary.
The women were part of a play written by WLU member Dagmar Petersen.
Ten "literary" clubs came together in 1889 to form the Ladies' Literary Union, which was renamed later the Woman's Literary Union. Eunice Nichols Frye of Portland provided the inspiration for the federation of clubs and, a year later, for the Maine Federation of Women's Clubs, which was part of the General Federation of Women's Clubs.
In the early years that the play depicted, members of the individual clubs studied various topics, wrote papers on them, and presented their work to the WLU. Each member club chose a yearly focus for study.
