Description
Nathan Goold, librarian at the Maine Historical Society in Portland, presented this gavel to the Woman's Literary Union to thank its members for serving for two years as volunteer guides at the newly opened Wadsworth-Longfellow House.
The house had been given to the Maine Historical Society by Anne Longfellow Pierce on her death in 1901 with the stipulation that it be used as a museum to honor her brother, the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and that the Maine Historical Society build its headquarters on the property.
The silver band around the head of the gavel reads, "Made from a piece of the door sill of the Wadsworth Longfellow House" on one side and, "Presented to the W.L.U. Aug 3, 1903 by Nathan Goold" on the other.
