Description
President Eisenhower speaks as the first woman to be elected to both houses of Congress and Skowhegan native, Senator Margaret Chase Smith, applauds. The Reverend John F. Johnson of Skowhegan is shown sitting behind Senator Smith in this photograph.
The President spoke briefly to the large crowd inside the Skowhegan Fair Grounds on his way back to Washington DC after vacationing in Maine. During his speech he stated "I have felt no more at home in any other town or city that I have visited in this country."
