Description
A group photograph of quarry workers in front of the slate processing mill. The five men in the front are holding slate splitting tools.
Slate splitting was a specialized task performed by only a few slate workers. It required the skill of correctly splitting the slate down to a size that was useable for the creation of shingles to be used in roofing. Because of the skill required for their job, splitters were paid higher wages then other mill workers.
