Description
Ladies and gentlemen are shown observing at the edge of the Monson Slate Works Quarry, ca. 1880. The railroad tracks in the foreground were for the Monson Narrow Gauge train, which hauled the finished slate to Monson Junction where it was transferred to the Bangor & Aroostook Railroad.
The derricks pictured here were used for the hoist, which brought the men and slate up and down from the quarry. The quarry is located just beyond the buildings in this photograph.
