Description
George F. Shepley of Portland, judge of the 1st U.S. Circuit Court, was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, on June 27, 1873.
Shepley, a native of Maine and an 1838 graduate of Dartmouth, had served as U.S. Attorney for Maine before the Civil War. During the war, he was commander of the 12th Maine Regiment, then appointed military governor of Louisiana. He served as military governor of Richmond, Virginia, after the surrender of that city to the Union.
In 1869, Shepley became the first judge of the new U.S. First Circuit Court, a position he held until his death in 1878.
