Description
In this photograph Will Roberts, is shown making slate shingles by hand. Splitting the slate by hand enabled the craftsman to maintain the the thickness of the slate shingle. Once the slate was split it was then squared in a chopper.
Roberts lived in Milo Junction (now called Derby) until the 1920's according to his grandson, William Sawtell. At that time he moved his wife Grace and three children, Connie, Gwilyn and Paul to Monson where he became the superintendent of the Matthews quarry.
This photograph is number five in a series of nine taken at the Barnard Slate Quarry.
