Description
This stereoview of an Indian encampment on the shore of Frenchmen's Bay, Bar Harbor shows a Native American family and their temporary summer homes. These villages were common to the Mount Desert Island area during the summer months prior to the 1920s. At the Indian encampments, the Wabanaki came to the shore from Orono, Old Town, and Penobscot County tribal lands to fish, clam, and sell their handmade goods and guiding services to summer visitors. Men and women of the tribes are shown in the photo along with boats and canoes used for fishing and transportation.
