Description
This image shows students and their teachers on the steps of Somesville Schoolhouse around the turn of the century.
This building served as the Somesville School from 1903 to 1943 at which time Somesville students were sent to schools in Northeast Harbor. Virginia Somes Sanderson wrote, "From 1907 to 1943, the average graduating class was five students, the largest, eleven."
In 1947 the building served as a staging area for University of Maine Forestry students who had come to fight the great fire on Mount Desert Island. The school house was converted to condominiums in 1980, yet, as of 2012, the building retains its external appearance as a school house.
