Description
Abraham Somes III (1802-1868) was the grandson of Abraham Somes, the first colonial settler of Mount Desert Island. He was a sea captain who traveled frequently to the West Indies. He became a ship builder and a successful business man, and in the 1860 census his property had the highest value of any citizen of the town.
Of his stern countenance, we can find supporting evidence from other documentary evidence. An 1848 letter from Mr. William Hamor compliments Abraham's disapproval of a dancing school that had been organized on the island.
