Description
This postcard depicts a horse and buggy on the road adjacent to Somes Sound called Sargeant Drive. Handwritten on the front is "Get your horse and come for a drive with May and Me. M.T."
In 1898, a group of civic-minded Northeast harbor summer residents joined forces to form the Northeast Harbor Village Improvement Society. Motivated by self-interest to organize and financially support services and infrastructure beyond the capacity of the town budget, their first projects included garbage collection, watering the roads to keep down dust in summer, building a swimming pool and the construction of a road.
The Society's minutes report reads, "During the year 1901 the Somes Sound Road which was begun in the year 1897 was completed.... The total cost of the road being $10,929.76. Of this sum the town of Mount Desert gave $2,000.... The road now connects with the old Mountain Road... [Society] member Samuel Duncan Seargeant coordinated the project, fellow summer resident James Terry Gardiner engineered the road and local contractor Chauncy Joy did the work." In 1903, the Sound and Mountain Roads were renamed Sargeant Drive and a boulder with a suitable inscription was placed on the Drive.
