Description
This photograph is of Weld Street in Dixfield. It was taken in the 1930s and shows the Dixfield Marble and Granite Works, owned by the Holt Brothers, on the right. Upstairs in the same building was the Holt Bros. Print Shop. Their home is just to the left.
This photo shows the elm trees that once lined Dixfield's main streets. The trees were planted in April, 1902, beginning on Arbor Day. They grew into a beautiful canopied "cathedral". The trees fell prey to Dutch elm disease beginning in the late 1940s and by 1968 nearly all of the trees had died and were removed.
