Description
President Franklin Pierce, in the first year of office, wrote to lawyer George F. Shepley of Portland, inviting him to visit the Pierces in Washington "for a week or two." He included Bion Bradbury, an Eastport lawyer, in the invitation.
Pierce wrote that he he had heard that Shepley was not well and need relaxation.
Shepley of Maine and Pierce of New Hampshire were both lawyers and Democrats. Pierce referred to a speech Shepley gave as "was seems to be conceded on all hands to have been the most able and effective speech ever made in a convention in Maine."
