Description
President Franklin Pierce wrote to Portland lawyer George F. Shepley, confirming a date that Shepley and Eastport lawyer Bion Bradbury would visit Pierce and his wife in Washington.
Pierce, a New Hampshire lawyer, was elected president in 1852 and served one term. All three men were active in the Democratic party.
Pierce wrote, "The effort to retain men in the Democratic ranks, who are known to be unsound upon the National questions is fatal to the permanent strength of the party, and treason to the Union."
