Fred Dow letter on account of father's capture, Portland, 1897

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Fred Dow of Portland, son of Neal Dow, a brigadier general who commanded the 13th Maine Regiment, wrote to John G. B. Simms of Arkansas, asking him to resend a letter he had written in 1891.

Simms letter included a newspaper clipping that recalled the capture by the 17th Arkansas Regiment, of which Simms was a member, of Dow, then recuperating from battle wounds at a Louisiana farmhouse.

Neal Dow died Oct. 2, 1897, and his son was about to publish Dow's reminiscences. He asked that the new letter be dated December 1883 to fit into the chronology of the book. Simms apparently resent the letter, but dated it July 1891.
