Description
Pvt. John N. Foster of Jay, who was 28 when he enlisted in Co. K. of the 28th Maine Regiment in October 1862, wrote to his wife and son from Warrington, Florida, reporting that the night before was "the hardest thing I've seen of the war yet."
He wrote that his regiment was being sent to New Orleans and commented on the shelling and sounds of the cannons -- and the trembling of the ground. The regiment was soon removed as Pensacola was evacuated.
