Infantry Tactics manual, 1862

Description

James L. Hunt, captain of Co. C of the 21st Maine Infantry, had a small copy of Infantry Tactics, for the Instruction, Exercise and Manoeuvres of the Soldier, a Company, Line of Skirmishers, Battalion, Brigade, or Corps D'Armee."

The book, written by Brig. Gen. Silas Casey, was small enough to carry in a pocket on a battlefield was published in 1862. The title page is shown.

Hunt, who was 37 when he enlisted in October 1862, rose to the rank of full lieutenant colonel. He ended his Civil War service in July 1865, having served in Co. E of the Maine Coast Guard Company for about seven months.
