Description
This photograph shows the Gilbert & Coombs Camps located on the West Outlet of Moosehead Lake around 1905. It also shows a steamboat docked at a wharf near the camps. Camps and cottages such as the ones in this image were a very important part of the Moosehead Lake economy.
These camps, also known as West Outlet Camps, were built in 1904, and were said to be the largest and most up-to-date camps in Maine offering all the comforts of home. Located at West Outlet of Moosehead Lake the cluster of 29 guest camps, the large main lodge and the numerous smaller cabins were made entirely of round logs. Gilbert & Coombs successfully ran the camps for twenty years before they were sold to Frank MacKenzie.
