Description

This photograph shows the" Red Bridge" on Bridge Street in Mexico during 1936 flood. The rising water did not seriously undermine the bridge; The First National Store and the Esso Station can also be seen in this image.

The Red Bridge was built in 1901 spanning the Swift River between Mexico and Rumford. It replaced the Porter Covered Bridge which was located further upstream and was destroyed in November of 1900 in an ice tornado. In 1961, the Red Bridge was rebuilt and the high steel framework was replaced by more modern masonry.
