Description
This graduation portrait from St. Theresa's School in Mexico, Maine, a Catholic elementary and middle school, depicts a 14-year-old John Edward Barry. Barry went on to attend Mexico High School before joining the U. S. Marine Corps.
Barry, who was born in 1925, was brought up in Mexico in a foster family. A suitcase containing this portrait, letters home, photographs of his birth parents, souvenirs, his Social Security card, a Purple Heart citation, baby shoes, and a number of other items related to his life was discovered in the attic of the Rangeley Inn around 2003. The suitcase was eventually donated to the Mexico Historical Society.
