Description
John W. Day of Berwick, a musician in Co. K of the 14th Maine Regiment, wrote to his sister in Great Falls, New Hampshire, describing a battle with Confederate forces on September 19, 1862 in Shepardstown, Virgina (now West Virginia).
Day, writing from Harrisonburg, Virginia, described the Union victory. He wrote, "The battle raged with great fury from early morn till night, when the Rebs commenced to retreat down the valley, closely followed by our Victorious, but very tired boys."
Day, a native of England, was 24 when he enlisted on Dec. 17, 1861. He later served in Co. C of the same regiment, also as a musician.
He concluded his letter, "So you see that there is doubtless much hard fighting ahead of us yet and I trust that He who has thus far sheilded me will protect me to the end --"
