Description
John W. Day of the 14th Maine wrote to his brother-in-law James Mathews, describing his regiments march to Georgia in 1865.
Day wrote that the soldiers had "a full supply of clothing and it was too heavy to carry so far so we just dumped them on the road, threw away about 40 dollars worth of clothing ..."
They marched 15 miles a day for nine days.
He concluded, "We have distroyed their army broke up their government and captured their President now what more can they do? I think the Rebellion is about played out."
