Description
Adeline M. Walker of the U.S. General Hospital in Annapolis, Maryland, wrote to Miss M.T. Hersey, secretary of the R.F. Society in Portland, which sent supplies to the hospital to aid wounded Union soldiers.
Walker noted that the hospital in Annapolis was "not as favorably situated as Hospitals in more loyal districts -- donations from the Citizens of Annapolis are rare."
She wrote that the hospital was full and that more patients were arriving daily. She detailed the types of clothing and food items the patients would appreciate.
Walker mentions the "young ladies" of the R.F. Society. "Miss Hersey" was most likely Maria T. Hersey, then about 19. Walker also inquired about Hersey's father, and wrote about a T.C. Hersey who was praised by patients for being kind to them aboard the New York when they were being transported to the hospital.
Hersey's father was Theophilus C. Hersey, president of the International Steamship Co., a merchant, and founder of the Portland Board of Trade.
