Description
Writing to Maria T. Hersey of Portland, Adeline M. Walker, a Portland native serving as a nurse at the U.S. General Hospital in Annapolis, Maryland, reported on a brief respite she had when the hospital was temporarily fairly empty.
Many of the new patients, she wrote, had died -- nearly all of typhoid pneumonia.
Hersey was secretary of the R.F. Society, a group of young women in Portland who sent aid to ill and injured soldiers. Walker was writing to thank her and the Portland group for a box that had arrived while Walker was on a break from the hospital.
She wrote, "Wish you could hear all the fine things said about your beautiful Union Quilt. I called the ladies into my room and a Council of War was held over the ingeniously-constructed work..."
Walker concluded her letter, "It is a privilege to be working on the right side in a contest like this."
