Description
This photograph shows Dixfield's enduring landmark, "The Church on the Hill," in the 1930's. The original structure was dedicated on Nov. 28, 1828. In 1856, a bell was purchased for the bell tower, and in the period between 1856 and 1912 most of the stained glass windows were installed. The front porch, or portico, was also built at around the same time that the stained glass windows were installed, replacing the two entrance doors of the original structure.
There were two entrance doors because male and female congregants were expected to enter the church through separate entrances. The "Church on the Hill" has been steadfast in its service to the community for over 200 years.
