Description
Martha "Mattie" Usher of Hollis, who was about 18, wrote to her cousin John Lane in Worcester, Massachusetts, telling him all the family news and gossip.
Usher noted that she was the only "girl" at home for the summer; all the rest were teachers or otherwise occupied. Her health was not good enough to do anything else, she wrote.
She asked Lane about the Worcester House that he apparently was operating with a business partner.
Usher jokes about available women and discusses Mrs. Jose, alias Mrs. Bradbury, who decided "she preferred the state of widowhood of matrimonial, so she quietly (perhaps) sent her husband away." Usher commented, "I should judge Mrs. J. to be a good advocate for woman's rights."
