Description
This postcard, “Published by A. T. Thorpe, Christmas Cove, Me.” and made in Germany was postmarked August 24, 1917.
Many of the boats shown to be at anchor, in this image, were owned by members of the Boston Yacht Club visiting the Cove on their summer cruise. The Inn, owned and operated by Edward Thorpe and his son Albert T. Thorpe, was built shortly after the first Holly Inn burned to the ground in 1907 and had 99 guest rooms.
It was the first Inn in Christmas Cove to have electric lights, powered by its own generator and water for the guests was pumped from the nearby Thorpe ice pond into a water tower on the premises. On August 10, 1923, the Inn burned to the ground.
