Description
This close-up photograph of the third bridge built over the "Gut" shows the massive superstructure with large rectangular counterweights at the top, called a "bob-tailed draw." Also clearly visible is the steel roadway which was raised and lowered by the action of the counterweights, thus allowing boats to pass through from either side of the Gut regardless of tide. It was built in 1921, but only lasted until late summer of 1929 when one of the chains to the counterweights broke. According to nearby resident Annie Mae Farrin, "We heard this awful bang and crash. End of bridge."
