Description
The superstructure of a bridge dominates the center of this image of South Bristol village, looking north toward the mainland from Rutherford Island. The bridge, a "bob-tailed" through-girder steel draw bridge, was built in 1921 to replace a deteriorated wooden bridge built in 1903, which in its turn replaced an 1891 bridge. The buildings on either side of the bridge housed locally-owned businesses including a grocery store, dry goods store, and a drug store.
