Description
Walter G. Morrill (1840-1935) of Williamsburg was 20 when he enlisted as a sergeant in Co. A of the 6th Maine Infantry. On Oct. 8, 1862 he received a commission as a lieutenant in Co. B of the 20th Maine Infantry, and on July 1, 1863 was promoted to captain and commander of the company. He became a full lieutenant colonel on March 13, 1865.
Morrill won a Medal of Honor at Rappahannock Station, Virginia, on Nov. 7, 1863 for leading his 20th Maine troops, without orders to do so, to support the 6th Maine in its attack.
