Militiamen in dress uniform, Westport Island, ca. 1875

Description

This sixth-plate tintype was found in the attic of the Jewett Cove, Westport Island house of Theresa Richardson. The house belonged to her husband's parents, George Bertram Richardson and Arameda Jewett Stacy Richardson who were married in 1890 in Bath. The home was originally a Jewett family homestead.

The men wore post-civil war militia or cadet uniforms, and preliminary research indicates they are circa 1870-1880 dress militia uniforms. Militia units based in the area included Gardiner, Portland, Rockland, and Bath. Bath is the closest city to Westport, but sea and river travel provided access and regular relationships for Westport Islanders with the other towns, so we have not been able to definitively identify the men, their unit, or uniforms.
