Description
The Rumford Mechanics Institute, the final creation in Rumford by Hugh J. Chisholm, owner of Oxford Paper Company, was intended to enhance the recreational and educational needs of the region's workers. The Writing Room offered desks and tables to accommodate educational pursuits.
This image is from the "Mechanics Institute, Rumford, Maine" booklet handed out at the building's ribbon cutting on November 9, 1911. It was published by University Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts.
