Description
The town of Rumford had a number of elementary schools, each located in close proximity to the residents which they served. The Virginia School was located in the Virginia section of Rumford on Prospect Avenue. It was built in 1896 at a cost of $1,397. The Pettengill School was situated on Maine Avenue, and was constructed in 1899 at a cost of $2,319.
As the population grew, additions were made to both facilities. However, these schools were both deemed unnecessary when school consolidation came into being, in the 1970s, and were demolished.
