Description
Members of the Institut Jacques Cartier in uniform, ca.1880. Although the location of this photograph is unknown, the apartment buildings in the background suggest the Little Canada neighborhood in Lewiston. The Institut's headquarters were in the Dominican Block in the same neighborhood.
The Institut Jacques Cartier was a patriotic fraternal organization with the mission of preserving French Canadian customs and tradition in the United States. Founded in 1872, it was the first French organization founded in Lewiston.
