Steamers at Shipyard Point, Moosehead Lake, ca. 1913

Contributed by Moosehead Historical Society

Description

This photograph shows four steamers docked at Shipyard Point, which was also known as Scott Beach, on Moosehead Lake. Shipyard Point was used for building, repairing, and winter dry-docking of steamboats.

Steamboats were first used on Moosehead Lake around 1850 and flourished for approximately the next one hundred years acting as both work and pleasure vessels. As of 2013, though no longer nearly as prevalent, one can still enjoy a steamboat cruise around Moosehead Lake.
