Notice of death and burial for John Edward Barry, 1945

Contributed by Mexico Historical Society

Description

John Edward Barry lost his life in service to his country by the United States Marine Corps. Barry was initially laid to rest at the Armed Forces Cemetery on Peleliu Island, but his foster mother, Fannie Bishop, later paid $75 to have him brought home and buried in Maine.

Barry was born in 1925 and brought up in Mexico, Maine. He attended Mexico High School and then joined the U.S. Marine Corps. A suitcase containing this burial notice, letters home, photographs of his birth parents, souvenirs, his Social Security card, his baby shoes, and a number of other items related to his life was discovered in the attic of the Rangeley Inn around 2003. The suitcase was eventually donated to the Mexico Historical Society.
