Description
Private John Edward Barry of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve was awarded the Purple Heart March 11, 1947, for Military Merit and wounds received in action resulting in his death on January 2, 1945, on Peleliu Island in the South Pacific.
Barry, who was born in 1925, was brought up in Mexico, Maine, in a foster family. He attended Mexico High School and then joined the U.S. Marine Corps. A suitcase containing this citation, letters home, photographs of his birth parents, souvenirs, his Social Security card, his baby shoes, and a number of other items related to his life was discovered in the attic of the Rangeley Inn around 2003. The suitcase was eventually donated to the Mexico Historical Society.
