Description
Letter from Wilmot Greenleaf while he is attending Kents Hill School. He expresses affection for Sarah and tells her how her brother, Valentine, is doing as a new student at Kents Hill.
Wilmot Greenleaf, born June 20, 1821, was the son of Westbrook Greenleaf and Martha Dunton; and like Sarah, was a resident of Westport Island. Sarah Tarbox, born on January 7, 1823, was the daughter of Mary "Polly" Brown and Samuel Tarbox. Samuel Tarbox was a member of the House of Representatives from Edgecomb in 1828 when Westport, then Jeremysquam, petitioned the State of Maine to legally separate from Edgecomb and become a town. Tarbox was a wealthy, influential landowner and businessman on Westport Island.
Kents Hill School was founded in 1824 as the Maine Wesleyan Seminary "to better society through education." The school is located in Readfield, ME, which Wilmot describes as being a nine-hour trip from Bath, ME.
