Description
This is a letter from Elizabeth B. Gorham, of Lewiston, a former schoolmate of Sarah Tarbox at Mrs. Field's School in Topsham. The letter starts on May 22, 1839 and talks about the illness of their former school mistress, Mrs. Fields, and the continuation of Elizabeth's music training. The second letter written on the same paper is written the following morning. It is a description of a steamboat trip that Elizabeth took from Portland to Boston and the sights she visits while in Boston.
Sarah Tarbox, born on January 7, 1823 in Westport, was the eighth of 12 children of Mary "Polly" Brown and Samuel Tarbox, a Westport Island gentleman farmer, investor and land trader. Sarah attended primary school on Westport Island. She continued her schooling at Mrs. Field's School as a boarding student where young women were taught basic French, decorum and social etiquette as well as academic basics, music and sewing. Mrs. Field's widowed daughter, Mrs. Beers, was the music teacher at the school.
