Description
Letter to Sarah Tarbox of Westport, from Eliza "Hutchins" also spelled Hutchings in local records. Eliza (b. April 11, 1835) was the daughter of Abigail Greenleaf and Frederick Hutchings. She was a niece of Sarah's husband, Wilmot Greenleaf (m. 1852). Eliza writes the letter on April 6 referencing that her birthday will be on Friday.
Sarah Tarbox, b. January 7, 1823, 12 years Eliza's senior, was the daughter of Mary "Polly" Brown and Samuel Tarbox, later known as "Squire" Tarbox. Samuel Tarbox played an important role in the development of Westport, which was established as a town in 1828. The Greenleaf family, another "first family" of Westport, also played an important role in establishing and governing the town.
