Description
A business letter to Wilmot Greenleaf, Westport, from John McDougall, North Boothbay, regarding the delivery of shingles. According to a history of Boothbay, Maine by Francis Byron Greene (1906), John McDougall operated a shipyard in North Boothbay from sometime around 1842 to 1853.
Willard Holten (Holton), who is mentioned in the letter was one of the founders and funders of the Congregational Meeting House in Boothbay built in 1846.
Wilmot Greenleaf was married to Sarah Tarbox on January 3, 1852. He was the son of Martha Dunton and Westbrook Greenleaf, a mill and business owner in Westport. Wilmot owned a blacksmith shop and a shingle machine at Greenleaf Cove. Sarah was the daughter of Mary "Polly" Brown and Samuel Tarbox, a gentleman farmer, land trader and civic leader in Westport, Maine.
