Description
Valentine Tarbox, while a student at Kents Hill School, writes to his older sister with news of his health and his classes and to inquire about his father's health. Valentine, age 12, has likely just started his first year of boarding school.
Kents Hill School, Readfield, ME, formally opened with the title Maine Wesleyan Seminary in the spring of 1824. The declaration of purpose for the school was "instruction to youth in the principles of experimental Christian religion, theology, literature and a practical knowledge of agriculture and mechanical arts".
Valentine and Sarah Tarbox are two of the children of Mary "Polly" and Samuel Tarbox. Samuel Tarbox was a wealthy landowner, fishing and shipping merchant, and town official in Westport Island, ME.
