Description
This letter to Sarah Tarbox from B. Knight expresses regrets for not meeting at the Sewing Society. Several of the letters in the Sarah Tarbox Collection reference sewing, i.e., beading, quilting, and making capes, dresses or "pantaloons". Sewing was both a practical skill and a basis for women to connect and socialize with other women. The Westport Sewing Society apparently met at the Island's Meeting House. Years later, when ownership of the Union Meeting House was transferred to the town, the Town Record Book memorialized the following covenant: "...the ladies sewing circle may have the hall whenever they wish."
Sarah Tarbox, born on January 7, 1823, was the daughter of Mary "Polly" Brown and Samuel Tarbox. Tarbox was a wealthy, influential landowner and businessman on Westport Island. B. Knight may be Betsey Knight, born in 1820 and daughter of Timothy and Betsey Knight.
