Description
A letter from mariner Florence Jewett to Wilmot Greenleaf, both of whom lived on Westport. Jewett alludes to surviving a shipwreck and informs the details of the next barque he will crew.
Wilmot Greenleaf married Sarah Tarbox in 1852. He was the son of Martha Dunton and Westbrook Greenleaf. Wilmot owned a blacksmith shop and a shingle machine at Greenleaf Cove and invested in ship building. Sarah was the daughter of Mary "Polly" Brown and Samuel Tarbox, a gentleman farmer, investor and civic leader in Westport, Maine.
Florence Mahoney Jewett was born September 22, 1805 and died March 23, 1884. He was a fisherman, mariner, and captain. His second wife, whom he married March 1, 1834, was Sarah Knight Dunton, a cousin of Wilmot Greenleaf.
According to Maine Maritime Museum records, Florence Jewett of Westport was the Master of several boats and schooners. Wilmot Greenleaf and Florence Jewett had a joint interest in at least two schooners at various times, the Lydia and Two Brothers.
