Description
Pvt. George M. Redlon wrote to his father in South China from Camp Knox near Yorktown, Virginia, in April 1862.
He commented, "Yorktown is very strongly fortified, but we will clean them out when we get ready." Redlon wrote that the troops supported Gen. George McClellan.
He also wrote that McClellan expected the war to end soon.
Redlon, a native of South China, worked as a jewelry journeyman in Rockland before he enlisted at age 22 as a private in Co. B of the 4th Maine Infantry.
Redlon died of battle wounds in October 1862.
