Description
Pvt. John E. Stewart of Co. G of the 6th Maine Infantry, wrote to "friend" Samantha Leighton of Columbia, also Stewart's hometown, apparently answering questions she had asked in a letter.
Stewart, a farmer who was 23 when he enlisted in July 1861, had been sending money to Leighton to save for him.
He also discussed picket and guard duty, the ubiquitous lice problem, and encountering a group of Rebels and Black people.
