Description
This painting is of Prescott F. Jernegan of Edgartown Massachusetts from around 1890.
In 1897 a Baptist preacher, the Reverend Prescott F. Jernegan (1866-1942), and accomplice Charles E. Fisher (1864-?) arrived in North Lubec intent upon defrauding investors in a gold-from-seawater hoax. A whirlwind construction project completed Plant #1 and began Plant #2 during the first half of 1898 at which point the two absconded to Europe. Lubeckers still discuss this so-called "Klondike" scam. Both Jernegan and Fisher were from Edgartown, Massachusetts. Neither was ever prosecuted.
